Last week marked the arrival of a Washington icon: the blooming of the cherry blossoms. We knew these trees lined the tidal basin near the national mall, but I've been surprised to see the white and pink blossoms all over the city and surrounds. Even our apartment complex is loaded with them.Of course, these trees are not indigenous to the area. The cherry blossoms were a 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington to honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan and to celebrate the continued close relationship between our two cultures. The cherry blossoms also originated in Japan. I guess the old saying is true, beware of strangers bearing gifts.

The cherry blossoms are really beautiful! We have a picture of us underneath them back when I was in middle school!
That is correct. 3800 more were given in 1965, and in 1981 cuttings from the trees were returned to Japan to replace trees destroyed in a flood. Tammy, let's see that picture!
